Nigeria: Gunmen kill approximately 50 people in attack on church in Owo, Ondo State, June 5 /update 1

Armed attackers entered the St Francis Xavier Catholic church, located on Owaluwa Street in Owo, Ondo State, June 5 and opened fire on worshippers. Latest reports indicate the attackers killed over 50 people in the attack before fleeing. There are also reports the attackers used explosives but this has not been independently verified. No group has claimed responsibility, and the motive for the attack is unclear.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the vicinity of the incident and may launch targeted operations in the region to apprehend the assailants. Localized transport disruptions, such as checkpoints, are likely along main roads.
