Senegal: Political gatherings likely nationwide ahead of the July 31 legislative election; protest planned June 29 /update 2

Political gatherings likely nationwide ahead of the July 31 legislative election. Protest planned June 29.

Warning

Event

Further political gatherings are likely nationwide ahead of the July 31 legislative election amid an increase in political tensions and disruptive protests by supporters of the opposition Yewwi Askan Wi coalition June 17. Yewwi Askan Wi officials have called for a protest June 29, announcing that the event will occur whether permission is granted or not, though no specific locations have been provided.

Protests are more likely in urban centers such as Dakar and in cities located in the southern regions of Ziguinchor, Sedhiou, and Kolda. In the capital, likely gathering locations include the Place de l'Obelisque (also called Place de la Nation), Place de l'Independance, and the Cheikh Anta Diop University.

Further related protests will likely be well attended, along with an increased security presence, likely causing road traffic and business disruptions in the vicinity. Given the anti-government nature of the protest and recent violence, the potential for clashes with security forces or rival activists is elevated. Claims of fraud in the aftermath of the results may also inflame ongoing tensions.

Context

Since June 3, the opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi has called for protests after authorities rejected the list of candidates for the upcoming election. While a June 8 demonstration passed relatively peacefully, violence occurred during unauthorized protests June 17. Reports indicate that at least two people died in Dakar and Bignona (Ziguinchor Region). An unspecified number of protesters have also been injured. The Yewwi Askan Wi spokesperson announced that security forces have arrested three opposition figures. The main opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, who was blocked from leaving his home June 17, has urged authorities to release arrested opposition figures.

Advice

Avoid political gatherings due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
