Chad: Opposition group plans march, likely in N'Djamena, July 16

Wakit Tama opposition group plans protest in Chad July 16, likely in N'Djamena. Increased security, disruptions likely, violence possible.

Warning

Event

The anti-government Wakit Tama movement has called for a protest march July 16 to oppose French influence in the country and the current transitional authorities. Organizers have not yet announced specific times or march itineraries., but precedent suggests actions will focus on N’Djamena, potentially near government buildings such as the Palace of January 15.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security in the vicinity of popular gathering locations, government buildings, and French-linked entities and businesses. Localized disruptions are likely near all protests. There is an elevated possibility of clashes with security forces due to the anti-government nature of the event. Wakit Tama organizers have called off a related protest scheduled May 28 following an order from officials banning protests. It is unclear whether authorities have granted permission for the July 16 event.

Context

Chad's political and security environment remains unstable following the April 20, 2021, death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno. The appointment of the late president's son, Mahamat Deby Itno, as the head of the Transitional Military Council (CMT), along with an 18-month transition period, the suspension of the constitution and the National Assembly, sparked nationwide anti-government protests. While recent demonstrations have been mostly peaceful, violence has impacted some gatherings. During a May 14 protest, which had been called to demand a return to civilian rule, widespread disruptions occurred, including damage to French company Total’s petrol stations amid rumors that France planned to install new military bases in the country. The protests degenerated into clashes, leaving at least 12 police officers injured.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. Keep away from any areas where security forces appear to be deploying; leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation.
