Authorities lift curfew in Gambela city, Gambela Region, July 20, initially imposed due to OLA/GLF attack.

Informational

Event

Authorities in Gambela Region lifted a 20:00-05:30 curfew in Gambela city July 20. The measure was initially implemented in mid-June in response to an attack on the city by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and Gambela Liberation Front (GLF). During the attack, the rebels temporarily controlled certain areas of the city; dozens of people were killed in the fighting.

Although authorities have lifted the curfew, they will likely maintain an increased security presence in the city; associated localized transport and commercial disruptions are also likely.

Context

The OLA has claimed responsibility for several attacks in recent months, especially in Oromia Region, after announcing an alliance with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in the context of the conflict in the Tigray Region. The OLA has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Ethiopian parliament. Further attacks on the city are possible over the near term.
