Ethiopia: Authorities reinforce indefinite 20:00-05:30 curfew in Gambela city, Gambela Region, as of July 15

Officials reinforce indefinite 20:00-05:30 curfew in Gambela city, Gambela Region, Ethiopia, as of July 15 after recent OLA/GLF attack.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Gambela Region have reinforced an indefinite 20:00-05:30 curfew in Gambela city as of July 15. The measure was initially implemented in mid-June in response to an attack on the city by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and Gambela Liberation Front (GLF). During the attack, the rebels temporarily controlled certain areas of the city; dozens of people were killed in the fighting. All movement is prohibited during curfew hours, except for the movement of ambulances and vehicles belonging to security forces.

Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence to ensure adherence to the curfew; associated localized transport and commercial disruptions are also likely. Locals opposed to the measure may stage protests; police will probably move forcefully to disperse any such gatherings that materialize. Further attacks are likely over the near term.

Context

The OLA has claimed responsibility for several attacks in recent months, especially in Oromia Region, after announcing an alliance with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in the context of the conflict in the Tigray Region. The OLA has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Ethiopian parliament.
