Guinea: Opposition suspends protest activity for one week, July 30; however, further protests may still occur /update 1

Event

The opposition National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) issued a statement on July 30 indicating that it was suspending protest activity for one week to allow for a mediation process. The suspension period covers Aug. 4, when FNDC had planned to protest in Conakry. Despite the announcement, opposition protests may continue in Conakry. The FNDC national coordinator Fonike Mengue, was arrested in Conakry overnight July 29/30. The arrest followed violent civil unrest in the capital July 28 and 29, which resulted in several casualties. The demonstrations have been called to denounce a current ban on protests and to demand a return to civilian rule.

Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to prevent any further protests from taking place. Clashes with security forces are likely should any protest materialize and if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near the protest venue.

Context

The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) announced a ban on gatherings May 13 and said it will remain in place until the start of the election cycle, likely in 2025. The CNRD warned of legal consequences should the order be disregarded. Opposition parties and human rights groups have denounced the measure as illegal. Increased political tensions are likely in the coming months. Opposition supporters may continue defying the government and gather despite the ban.
