Guinea: Unruly demonstration in Conakry July 29
Opposition activists stage unruly protest in Conakry, Guinea, July 29 despite indefinite ban on protests. Avoid all demonstrations.
Event
Activists from the opposition National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) are protesting in Conakry July 29. Protesters have reportedly set up barricades on the highway crossing the Cosa-Bambeto-Kolemi neighborhoods. Participants have reportedly thrown stones at security forces, who have used tear gas to disperse protesters. The demonstration comes a day after a protest in the capital during which one person was killed and several others injured. A similar protest is scheduled Aug. 4. The demonstrations have been called to denounce a current ban on protests and to demand a return to civilian rule.
Additional security personnel have been deployed across the capital. Further clashes with security forces are likely should demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near the protest venue.
Context
The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) announced a ban on gatherings May 13 and said it will remain in place until the start of the election cycle, likely in 2025. The CNRD warned of legal consequences should the order be disregarded. Opposition parties and human rights groups have denounced the measure as illegal. Increased political tensions are likely in the coming months. Opposition supporters may continue defying the government and gather despite the ban.
Advice
Monitor developments closely. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area immediately if crowds form. Heed the directives of local security officials.
