India: Political party plans protests in Chhattisgarh State July 15-20

Bharatiya Janata Party calls for protests in Chhattisgarh State, India, July 15-20. Increased security likely; disruptions, clashes possible

Informational

Event

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for protests in all assembly constituencies in Chhattisgarh July 15-20. Participants intend to denounce rising unemployment in the state. The largest protests are likely in district headquarters as well as the state capital, Raipur. Dozens to a few hundred people will likely participate in larger protests. BJP leaders had previously called for related protests outside ruling Indian National Congress (INC) lawmakers' homes July 1-5. Organizers plan to hold additional protests in the coming weeks.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Supporters of rival groups may hold counterprotests, possibly prompting confrontations between party supporters. Protesters may march along or block nearby roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
