India: Authorities likely to maintain heightened security in parts of New Delhi through at least mid-October

Tight security likely near Embassy of Israel and other parts of New Delhi, India, through at least mid-October. Exercise increased caution.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture near the Embassy of Israel and other parts of New Delhi through at least mid-October as a precaution in the aftermath of escalating tensions in the Middle East. The government has increased patrols and erected barricades near the embassy. Law enforcement personnel will also maintain an increased security presence near Jewish cultural and religious establishments. It remains unclear exactly how long the measures will remain in place.

Associated localized business and transport disruptions are likely. Isolated security incidents, including small-scale explosions or acts of vandalism, cannot be ruled out.

Exercise increased caution if operating in or near New Delhi. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Confirm business appointments, transport reservations, deliveries, and road status. Do not check out of accommodations before confirming onward travel. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Heed all official transport and security advisories.

The increased security measures around the Embassy of Israel and other locations in New Delhi are not necessarily indicative of escalating risks in the operational environment. Similar security measures are in effect near other Israeli diplomatic missions in several countries, including Denmark.

In Jan. 2021, a low-intensity blast occurred near the embassy during a major ceremony, damaging vehicles but resulting in no injuries. In Dec. 2023, another explosion took place close to the embassy; although it also caused no casualties, a letter referencing Israel's actions in Gaza was found nearby, suggesting a potential motive linked to regional tensions.
