Japan: Sakurajima Volcano, located east of Kagoshima City, erupts July 24 /update 1
Sakurajima Volcano, located east of Kagoshima City, Japan, erupts July 24. Meteorological authorities urge evacuations.
Event
The Sakurajima Volcano, located east of Kagoshima City, erupted July 24, sending smoke and ash into the atmosphere, and raining down volcanic stones; there are no reports of damage. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has elevated the volcano's eruption alert level from 3 to 5, the highest level. On level 5, residents within 3 km (1.9 mile) of the crater are urged to evacuate; this includes the Arimura and Furusato areas of Kagoshima City. The JMA is urging caution against falling rocks and stones and pyroclastic flows within a 2 km (1.2 mile) radius of the Minamidake and Showa craters. Kagoshima City is the largest urban center in proximity to the volcano; much of the rest of the city lies outside of this radius.
Transport
Transport disruptions are possible in the surrounding area, especially if a significant eruptive event occurs. Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibility could be reduced. Officials might close roads near the volcano depending on the presence of hazardous volcanic material. Fine particulate matter ejected from the volcano could pose a hazard to flights in the surrounding airspace. Authorities might temporarily close airport facilities if significant ashfall accumulations occur.
Advice
Confirm flights if a large eruption occurs. Plan for possible transportation disruptions if operating near thevolcano in the coming days. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving; due to reduced visibility, drive cautiously in areas affected by ash. Carry masks or face coverings and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation if operating in the affected area.
