Civil society activists plan demonstration in Lilongwe, Malawi, July 26. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.

Informational

Event

Supporters of the Mbadwa Zokhudzidwa za Malawi civil society group have reportedly gathered in front of the District Commissioner's offices in Lilongwe to demand the closure of the office of the Anti-Corruption Bureau Director Martha Chizuma. A heavy police presence has been reported in the area.

Clashes between police forces and protesters are possible should protesters ignore police orders to disperse. The demonstration may also cause localized road travel and business disruptions. Protesters could block roads.

Context

Political tensions are high in Malawi, as Vice President Saulos Chilima and other government officials are implicated in an ongoing corruption investigation, called the Sattar scandal. Businessman Zuneth Sattar is being jointly investigated by Malawi's Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA) for alleged bribery over ten years. Sattar is suspected of helping funding demonstrators in Malawi protesting against ACB director Martha Chizuma, against whom they have reportedly threatened violence.

President Chakwera campaigned against corruption and has historically vocalized his desire to do away with corrupt politicians since he took office in June 2020. In the past, members of the cabinet were accused of corruption, prompting a cabinet reshuffle in January 2022.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations. Heed the instructions of local officials. Plan for localized disruptions. Liaise with trusted contacts regarding precise protest locations.
