Civil society groups, including the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), have called for nationwide demonstrations, July 28. The protests have been called to demand President Lazarus Chakwera remove presidential immunity. Specific start times and locations have not been provided; however, gatherings are likely in Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu. Protesters are likely to march along major road routes or near government buildings.

Separately, a cultural grouping, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe, has threatened to demonstrate, July 28. The gathering is in opposition to the alleged discrimination of the Lhomwes community, located in southeastern Malawi. A related gathering was held in Phalombe, July 19. Likely gathering areas include Lilongwe and towns in southern Malawi, including Blantyre.

Security forces will likely deploy to all protest sites and will seek to disperse unauthorized gatherings. Police clashed with demonstrators and arrested dozens of people in Lilongwe July 20 during a disruptive protest organized by the Human Rights Ambassadors over allegations of bias within the judiciary. Demonstrations may also cause localized road travel and business disruptions. Protesters could block roads.
