Nigerian officials announced on July 2 that unidentified gunmen ambushed and killed 30 soldiers following a June 29 attack on a mine in the village of Ajata Aboki in Niger State's Shiroro region. The gunmen abducted four Chinese nationals and several local workers of the mine. The identity of the assailants and the whereabouts of the victims remain unknown as of July 2. A security operation is underway to locate the victims.

Increased security and localized transport and business disruptions are likely for the duration of the operation. Further similar attacks remain possible.

Context

Armed robberies and banditry are prevalent in Nigeria. Criminals regularly engage in cattle raiding, looting, extortion, and kidnapping for ransom. The threat is elevated in the country's northwestern region, where officials have yet to rein in armed attacks and abductions.
