North Macedonia: Activists plan to protest in Skopje July 10 /update 1

Activists plan to protest in Skopje, North Macedonia, July 10; additional gatherings likely. Heightened security probable.

Informational

Event

Opposition activists plan to demonstrate outside the Government of North Macedonia building in Skopje beginning 19:00 July 10. The action is to denounce a French proposal put forward to resolve disputes with Bulgaria that prevent North Macedonia from starting the process of joining the EU. Attendance could reach the thousands.

Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the demonstration. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. Isolated clashes between activists and security forces have occurred at recent demonstrations; further skirmishes are possible.

Context

The French proposal relates to Bulgarian disputes with North Macedonia over regional identity, culture, and language. The Bulgarian government refuses to support North Macedonia's bid to join the EU over these issues; accession to the EU requires unanimous approval from all member states. VMRO-DPMNE and other opposition activists reject the French proposal claiming it concedes too much to Bulgaria in the disputes and insufficiently protects North Macedonian culture. Activists have staged daily demonstrations against the proposal since July 2; protests will likely continue in the coming days as parliament debates the proposal.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow additional time to reach destinations in central Skopje.
