North Macedonia: Opposition protests likely in Skopje through July 10

Opposition protests likely in Skopje, North Macedonia, through July 10; increased security localized disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Opposition activists are likely to stage protests in Skopje through July 10 denouncing a French proposal put forward to resolve disputes with Bulgaria that prevent North Macedonia from beginning the process of joining the EU. The VMRO-DPMNE party has been leading daily protests outside the Government of North Macedonia building since July 2. A protest is confirmed from 19:00 July 5. Attendance can reach the thousands.

Additional police will deploy to monitor all actions. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. Isolated clashes between activists and security forces have been reported at similar demonstrations in previous days. Further clashes are likely at all future related protests. While bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence, they would face an indirect threat of harm.

Context

The French proposal relates to Bulgarian disputes with North Macedonia over regional identity, culture, and language. The Bulgarian government refuses to support North Macedonia's bid to join the EU until these issues are addressed; accession to the EU requires unanimous approval from all member states. VMRO-DPMNE and other opposition activists reject the French proposal claiming it concedes too much to Bulgaria in the disputes and insufficiently protects North Macedonian culture. Activists have staged daily protests against the proposal since July 2; protests are likely to continue over the coming days as the proposal is presented to parliament.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in protest-affected areas.
