North Macedonia: Residual disruptions likely after protesters demonstrate outside of government buildings in Skopje, then mostly disperse late July 4
Residual disruptions likely in Skopje, North Macedonia, into early July 5 after activists protest outside of government buildings July 4.
Event
Tight security measures and residual transport disruptions are likely in central Skopje into early July 5 after activists staged protests outside of multiple government buildings in the capital July 4. Most demonstrators have dispersed as of late July 4, with some reportedly remaining in front of the Government of the Republic building and on adjacent Boulevard Ilinden. Police are maintaining heightened security in the area. The purpose of the protests is to denounce a French proposal that aims to end a dispute with Bulgaria that is impeding Skopje's efforts to join the EU. Activists assert that Skopje has made excessive concessions to Sofia with regard to disagreements over North Macedonia's history, culture, and language.
Public transport normally routed through the affected area may be diverted or canceled over the coming hours. Clashes between remaining protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid protest activity as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check local traffic conditions and public transport schedules for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in protest-affected areas late July 4-early July 5.
