Pakistan: Activist threatens to block Gwadar Port in Balochistan Province from July 21

Baloch activists threaten to block Gwadar Port in Balochistan Province, Pakistan, from July 21. Shipping disruptions, clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists from the Haq Do Tehreek Balochistan movement have threatened to block the entrance of the Gwadar Port from July 21 over delays by the provincial government in fulfilling its promises. The group held a similar 31-day sit-in late 2021 over multiple demands like banning illegal fishing activity and removing unnecessary security check posts. Several hundred to a few thousand people may participate in the demonstration. Additional marches, road blockades, and sit-ins are possible across Gwadar near local government buildings, prominent intersections, and public squares.

Authorities will probably tighten security measures at Gwadar Port if the protest materializes. Localized transport and delivery disruptions may occur if protesters march along or block major roadways, such as Makran Coastal Highway. Maritime freight disruptions may occur, particularly in the event of a prolonged demonstration. Clashes between demonstrators and security personnel are possible. Enhanced security measures such as road barricades blocking protestor movement towards Gwadar Port, as well as temporary controls on public movement and internet services cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid Gwadar Port and nearby areas if the action occurs due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building. Confirm all transport and commercial reservations in advance. Do not route shipments through affected terminals without verifying onward transport. Use alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive freight. Follow all security personnel instructions. Plan for localized transport disruptions near Gwadar Port.
