Peru: Leftist groups plan nationwide demonstrations July 25-26 to support President Castillo

Leftist groups plan marches across Peru July 25-26 to support President Castillo. Tight security, transit disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Multiple leftist groups, including the Movement for Amnesty and Funtamental Rights (Movimiento por la Amnistia y Derechos Fundamentales, MOVADEF), and the National Federation of Workers in Education of Peru (Federacion Nacional de Trabajadores en la Educacion del Peru, FENATEP), have planned demonstrations across Peru July 25-26 in support of President Pedro Castillo. Reports suggest that some of the organizers may be tied to the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) insurgency group. While the groups have announced their intention to stage multiple street protests July 25-26, specific times and locations for the gatherings have not been confirmed. Likely rally points include public squares and government buildings in Lima and urban centers.

There will likely be a heightened security presence around the main protests, particularly in Lima. Counter-demonstrations are possible, and clashes between demonstrators and counter-protesters are possible. Localized transit disruptions are likely near protest sites.

Advice

Avoid demonstrations, due to the risk of clashes. Comply with directives given by authorities. If demonstrations become violent, immediately find shelter in a secure, non-government building. Plan for localized transit disruptions.
