Spain: Nationwide Ryanair strike likely to continue through at least late July

Ryanair staff launches new nationwide strike in Spain on July 12; flight cancelations and delays likely through end of July.

Warning

Event

Unions representing Ryanair (FR) staff have launched a new series of nationwide strikes in Spain as of July 12. Labor leaders have planned three rounds of work stoppages through the end of the month, with the first running July 12-15, the second July 18-21, and the third taking place July 25-28. The purpose of the action is to demand improvements in work conditions after negations between the company and its workers failed.

The strike will likely prompt significant disruptions at the 10 Spanish airports served by Ryanair, including Madrid (MAD), Malaga (AGP), Seville (SVQ), Alicante (ALC), Valencia (VLC), Barcelona (BCN), Girona (GRO), Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), Ibiza (IBZ), and Palma de Mallorca (PMI). Resulting cancelations and delays could extend several hours after each strike period ends as the carrier moves to reposition aircraft and resolve any passenger backlogs. The action could be suspended or canceled at any time should negotiations between union leaders and management prove successful.

Advice

Confirm flights if booked to fly on Ryanair to or from Spain through the end of July. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider alternate arrangements for critical travel.
