Turkey: Public healthcare workers staging nationwide strike through July 8

Members of the Turkish Medical Association (Turk Tabipleri Birligi, TTB) have launched a nationwide strike July 7. The purpose of the action, which will last through July 8, is to protest violence against physicians; the TTB initiated the walkout in reaction to the recent killing of a doctor in the city of Konya.

The strike is disrupting medical services at public hospitals across Turkey. Public healthcare facilities are operating on reduced holiday schedules during the work stoppage; however, emergency cases are still being seen. Delays are also possible at private hospitals and clinics as patients who would normally use public health establishments seek alternative treatment options.

On July 7, striking workers staged street protests in a number of cities across Turkey, including Ankara, Kayseri, Bursa, Manisa, and Denizli. In Istanbul, police used pepper spray to disperse demonstrators who had gathered at the Istanbul Medical College in the city's Capa neighborhood in preparation for a march to the Provincial Health Department. Further protests are likely through July 8. Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heavy police presence near any such gatherings that may materialize; additional clashes are possible.
