US: Abortion rights groups likely to continue demonstrating nationwide through mid-July /update 2

Abortion rights activists likely to continue protesting across the US through mid-July, following Supreme Court ruling.

Informational

Event

Abortion rights activists are likely to continue staging protests in multiple locations across the US through at least mid-July in response to a Supreme Court judgment that overturned a 1973 ruling establishing the right to abortion nationwide.

While rallies and marches will likely occur in most states, especially in major cities and state capitals, activists have confirmed some protest locations in the coming days:

July 10

  • Augusta, Maine: Capitol Park, 17:00

  • Georgetown, Texas: City Hall, 18:00

  • New York, New York: Tompkins Square Park, 16:00

  • Santa Monica, California: Crescent Bay Park, 12:00

July 11

  • Arlington Heights, Illinois: 155 East Eastman Street, 18:00

July 13

  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida: Federal Courthouse, 15:00

  • New Orleans, Louisiana: Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, 17:00

Government buildings, including federal courts, are likely rallying points in any demonstrations that occur. Protests are also likely to continue outside the US Supreme Court and the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Authorities have built a protective fence surrounding the Supreme Court building due to the likelihood of large protests, and unauthorized personnel are prohibited from accessing the building. Additional security measures are likely to be implemented around government buildings and key infrastructure across the country.

While demonstrations will likely vary in size, heightened security and localized transport disruptions are possible near any action that materializes. Counter-protests are also likely in major cities; clashes between opposing groups, or between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near announced rally sites. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
