Security forces have reportedly fired live rounds and deployed water cannons against protesters gathering in Al Kahla District, Maysan Governorate Aug. 7. Protesters had initially gathered to demonstrate against declining services in the area, including frequent electricity outages. Ali Al-Zaki Bridge has reportedly been closed by authorities.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture in the protest area until the situation stabilizes. Localized transport disruptions are likely through at least late Aug. 7. Further related protests are possible in the coming days.
