Italy: Disruptions due to severe weather ongoing in parts of Campania Region as of Aug. 10

Disruptions following storms and heavy rainfall ongoing in parts of Campania Region, Italy, as of Aug. 10. Further adverse weather forecast.

Warning

Event

As of Aug. 10, disruptions are ongoing across parts of Campania Region after storms brought heavy rainfall and strong winds across much of the region Aug. 9. Numerous roads across the region have been blocked by flooding and landslides and damage assessments are ongoing to ascertain the level of damage to infrastructure. Avellino Province was amongst the worst-affected areas. Flooding and mud flows inundated parts of the town of Monteforte Irpino. Many streets in the town have been blocked and dozens of homes and vehicles damaged. Authorities in the town advised residents not to leave their homes late Aug. 9 due to the severe weather. Storms also downed trees and flooded roads in Caserta Province and emergency services were deployed to assist dozens of people in Benevento Province. Damage to roads has been reported in the Marano and Sorrento areas of Naples Province, as well as landslides on the Sorrento Coast. On the island of Capri a ferry was pushed against the main quay by strong winds.

Further adverse weather is forecast across Campania late Aug. 10 before conditions are expected to become more stable from Aug. 11; however, isolated storms and showers are possible through Aug. 12. Civil Protection authorities have warned of further thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over the coming hours and yellow thunderstorm warnings (the lowest level on a three-tier scale) have been issued across the region through late Aug. 10. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

Hazardous Conditions
The storms could produce rounds of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and isolated thunderstorm activity across the affected area. Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed or a lack of stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil. Power outages could occur throughout the affected area.

Transport
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. The disruptive weather may cause some delays and cancellations at airports in the worst-affected regions. Authorities may temporarily suspend port operations if strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions, impacting freight and passenger maritime traffic. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas that see heavy rainfall and potential track blockages.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
