Kosovo: Activists engaged in ongoing protest in central Pristina Aug. 31

Activists engaged in an ongoing protest in central Pristina, Kosovo, Aug. 31; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Collective for Feminist Thought and Action activist group is leading ongoing protests in central Pristina Aug. 31. The purpose of the action is to denounce violence against women following a recent sexual assault in the city. Participants gathered at Zahir Pajaziti Square and have been protesting outside several government offices in the surrounding area. Participation is reportedly in the thousands.

Additional police are deployed to monitor the action. Large crowds and associated security measures are prompting localized transport disruptions in the affected area. The action is likely to pass off peacefully though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons or enter government offices.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in central Pristina.
