Informational

Event

The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) plans to stage anti-government protests in Monrovia Aug. 24. The event, which is an extension of the so-called "Fix The Country" campaign, coincides with Liberia's National Flag Day observance; the purpose of the SUP action is to denounce alleged government corruption, as well as poverty, insecurity, and the poor state of infrastructure. Although organizers have as yet announced no specific demonstration start times or locations, activists could assemble near the SUP's base at the University of Liberia, at government buildings, or other prominent locations in Monrovia. Related gatherings are also possible in cities and towns elsewhere around the country.

Heightened security, as well as localized traffic and business disruptions, are likely near any protests that may materialize. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and leave at the first sign of a confrontation. Monitor local media for further updates regarding gathering times and locations as organizers may not announce details in advance.
