Adverse weather forecast across much of South Island and southern North Island, New Zealand, through at least Aug. 8
Event
Adverse weather is forecast across most of South Island and southern North Island through at least Aug. 8. As of late Aug. 7, the New Zealand National Meteorological Service (MetService) has issued various orange and yellow level warnings for heavy snowfall, rain, and wind across the impacted location. Updated warnings can be accessed by clicking here. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.
Where precipitation falls as rain, flash, and areal flooding is possible. Such flooding is possible in low-lying communities near watercourses and other large bodies of water and in urban areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Precipitation could fall as snow in the higher elevations. Wind gusts could cause blowing and drifting snow; decreased visibility is likely in mountainous areas. Rain-induced landslides cannot be discounted in areas of elevated terrain. Power outages could occur throughout the affected area.
Disruptions triggered by inclement weather and resultant hazards, such as flooding or avalanches, could persist well after conditions have improved.
Advice
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
