New Zealand: Environmental activists blocking road in Nelson Aug. 12

Extinction Rebellion members are blocking a section of Trafalgar Street, near the intersection with Halifax Street, in Nelson as of midday Aug. 12 to demand the local government act on climate change. Although only a few protesters are participating in the demonstration, they have erected a barrier in the street. The duration of the action is unclear. Authorities have warned people to avoid the area.

Police are on the scene and monitoring the demonstration; roadblocks appear to be in place on the affected section of Trafalgar Street. Minor localized transport disruptions are possible near the protest site.
