Further protests possible in Lahore, Pakistan, as of Aug. 23 following recent protests. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Additional protests are possible in Lahore, Punjab Province, as of Aug. 23, following multiple demonstrations in recent days denouncing increased electricity prices. Residents held protests blocking traffic on several roadways, including Gulshan-e-Ravi, Multan, and Walton roads, Aug. 22. Residents also gathered outside the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) office on Multan Road Aug. 23. Additional protests will likely involve people marching along highways and other roads, though gatherings at government buildings, especially LESCO and Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) offices, and public squares are also probable. Security personnel usually close sections of affected roadways and divert traffic from protest locations. Protests may involve dozens to a few hundred people.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse gatherings if they are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible; police may fire tear gas and water cannons at disruptive crowds. Protests and resultant security measures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Monitor local media sources for information on protests and traffic disruptions, as organizers may not announce actions in advance.
