Pakistan: Civil organization calls for protests in multiple areas Aug. 12
Pakistan Tahafuz Movement plans protests in multiple areas of Pakistan Aug. 12. Increased security likely; disruptions, clashes possible.
Event
The Pakistan Tahafuz Movement (PTM) has called for protests in multiple areas Aug. 12. Protests will likely occur in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh provinces. The biggest gatherings are probable in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Announced rallies will occur in Kohat and urban centers including Karachi; activists will also march from Quetta's Bolan Medical College to the Governor's House, 16:00. Participants intend to demonstrate solidarity with ongoing protests over the killing of a lawmaker in Lower Dir District Aug. 6; locals claim militants carried out the attack for extortion. Participants will also emphasize long-standing demands including alleged human rights violations by security forces. Likely protest venues include government buildings, such as chief ministerial offices and assembly buildings, as well as at public squares and along highways. Larger protests may involve dozens to a couple hundred people.
Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, especially if security forces forcibly attempt to break up crowds. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Authorities have recently suspended mobile telecommunications services in North Waziristan due to related protests. Officials may enforce similar measures in other areas where disruptive protests break out.
Advice
Avoid protests due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Monitor telecommunications services in case officials suspend them.
