Warning

Event

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) party is calling for protests outside press clubs nationwide Aug. 17-18 to denounce alleged stifling of media freedom by the federal government. Rallies will occur at 17:00 Aug. 17 across Sindh Province and 17:00 Aug. 18 in other provinces. The largest protest is likely in Islamabad Aug. 18. Additional gatherings by journalist unions and other opposition parties are possible in the coming days near government buildings and political party offices, as well as at major intersections and public squares. Dozens to a few hundred people may join each event.

Authorities will likely tighten security near protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests.
