Hundreds of miners blocked the Interoceanic Highway in Tambopata Province, Madre de Dios Region, Aug. 26. The protesters are demanding authorities withdraw police from the region following clashes with miners the previous day that left one person dead and 14 others injured. According to media reports, traffic was completely blocked on the highway, preventing access to Cusco and Arequipa. The demonstrators are threatening to expand their protests if their demands are not met.
