Event
Activists from various civil and labor groups plan to hold demonstrations and events in Seoul Aug. 13-15 to commemorate Liberation Day. Organizers have announced protests at the following times and locations:
Aug. 13: Participants from groups supporting the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula will gather at Sungnyemun Gate from 14:30 and march to the Samgak area in Yongsan District from 15:00. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) will gather at Sungnyemun Gate from 14:00.
Aug. 14: An "All National Run Event" will take place from Blue House to National Museum of Korea 07:30-10:00.
Aug. 15: The Liberty Korea Party will hold a rally at Gwanghwamun Building, though organizers have yet to announce a start time for the action.
Hundreds to thousands of people may participate in the demonstrations. Other gatherings are possible at government buildings and at public squares, such as Gwanghwamun Plaza, City Hall Station, Dongdaemun Intersection, Yeouido Park, and National Assembly. Officials have advised the public to use public transport in downtown Seoul due to likely traffic congestion.
Police will likely deploy officers to monitor protests. Roadblocks are possible if significant rallies occur; localized traffic congestion is possible near protest sites. Violence is unlikely, though minor skirmishes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, especially if participants attempt to gather in unauthorized areas or attempt to breach security cordons.
Advice
Avoid the rallies as a security precaution. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest locations as organizers may not announce them in advance. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near events. Confirm business appointments and transport schedules in advance.
