Africa: Air traffic controllers suspend regionwide strike, Sept. 24 /update 1

Event

The air traffic controllers' union, Agency for Aerial Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) suspended, for ten days, a regionwide strike, Sept. 24. The strike was due to run from Sept. 23-25. Flight operations have reportedly resumed at all impacted airports. Participants have given the management until Oct. 4 to address their grievances, including improved work conditions and the reinforcement of operational capacities.

Disruptions may persist in the coming hours as officials clear any backlog of flights.

Context

ASECNA manages airspace which covers six Flight Information Regions (FIRs), including Chad, Madagascar, Niger, Congo, and Senegal, and represents 12 other countries including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Togo.
