Australia: Ground handlers at Adelaide, Brisbane, and Sydney airports to stage 24-hour strike Sept. 12

Ground handlers plan 24-hour strike at Australia's Adelaide, Brisbane, and Sydney airports Sept. 12. Flight disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Ground handlers employed by the Dubai National Air Travel Agency (Dnata) plan to stage a 24-hour strike in Australia on Sept. 12; the purpose of the walkout is to demand higher wages and better working conditions. The labor action will specifically target Adelaide Airport (ADL), Brisbane Airport (BNE), and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD).

Unless averted, the strike will likely cause significant flight disruptions at the three affected facilities. Officials with the Transport Workers' Union of Australia (TWU) expect the work stoppage to primarily impact Qantas' (QF) international flights, although some spillover disruptions are also possible on the carrier's domestic routes. Disruptions are also likely on international services operated by Emirates Airline (EK).

Advice

Contact travel provider to reconfirm flights if booked to fly via ADL, BNE, or SYD on Sept. 12. Arrive at the airport early and allow extra time for baggage checks. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
