US Embassy in Burkina Faso issues a security alert Sept. 14 discouraging travel along the RN1 east of Bobo-Dioulasso.

Informational

Event

The US Embassy in Ouagadougou issued a security alert Sept. 14 discouraging travel along the RN1 highway east of the regional capital of Bobo-Dioulasso between Koumbia, Tuy Province, and Ouahabou, Bale Province. The warning follows recent militant attacks in the neighboring provinces of Mouhoun and Banwa. However, the alert did not reference any specific intelligence concerning imminent attacks or potential targets. The embassy reiterated that embassy personnel are prohibited from traveling outside of Ouagadougou due to the increased risk of terrorist attacks, kidnapping, and criminal activity.

Burkinabe authorities could implement increased security, including checkpoints, night patrols, as well as random vehicle searches, around the city limits of Bobo-Dioulasso over the coming weeks. Localized transport disruptions could occur in areas with a heavy security presence.

Advice

Consider deferring nonessential travel along the RN1 east of Bobo-Dioulasso. If travel is unavoidable, exercise a high degree of caution in affected areas and heed authorities' instructions. Maintain a very low profile, restrict nighttime movements, vary routines, and move in guarded convoys. Carry identification and travel documents at all times. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Do not discuss details of travel plans in public places.
