Costa Rica: Panamerican Highway 1 near Cambronero closed indefinitely for repairs as of Sept. 16; other highways in poor condition

Authorities have closed a section of the Panamerican Highway 1 in the Cambronero area near San Ramon as of Sept. 26 to conduct maintenance following recent landslides. Officials estimate that the repairs will take three to four months and have redirected traffic to Route 27 to Caldera; however, they have warned that poor conditions on this route are slowing traffic down significantly. Additional reports indicate that Route 32 between San Jose and the Caribbean coast is also experiencing intermittent closures due to landslides.

Transport disruptions on affected routes are almost certain. Companies dependent on truck shipments will probably face business disruptions. Additional road closures due to poor conditions are possible at short notice.

Cambronero is approximately 51 km (32 miles) west of San Jose.
