Dozens of unidentified assailants riding motorcycles attacked Bakiyawa, Katsina State, overnight Sept. 14-15. Reports suggest that attackers kidnapped up to 50 residents, killed one, and injured four others. During the attack that lasted several hours, assailants also looted buildings. There have been no reported ransom demands as yet. Security operations are underway. Bakiyawa is located about 20 km (12 miles) west of Katsina city.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the areas surrounding Bakiyawa and launch operations to apprehend the attackers and rescue the victims in the coming days. Localized transport disruptions are likely along main roads due to security checkpoints. Armed clashes between kidnappers and security forces cannot be ruled out.

There is a high threat of kidnapping across all states in Nigeria. The threat is particularly elevated in the northwest, where officials have failed to curtail attacks and kidnappings despite various security measures implemented, such as increased operations, curfews, and business restrictions.
