Activists likely to hold protests in Bangkok, Thailand, through at least early October. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists will likely protest in Bangkok through at least early October. Demonstrators are opposed to the Constitutional Court's Sept. 30 decision to extend the recently suspended prime minister's tenure following the 2014 coup. On Oct. 1, various groups, including the Thalufah and United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration (UFTD), will rally at Victory Monument beginning 16:00. Participants will likely cause traffic disruptions along nearby roads that day.

Although organizers have not yet revealed other specific details, demonstrators will likely gather outside the Constitutional Court building, as well as near prominent public squares, government buildings, and roadways. Typical protest venues include Asoke Intersection, Democracy Monument, Democrat Party Headquarters, Government House, Lumphini Park, National Assembly, and Victory Monument. Pro-government supporters may also hold counterdemonstrations. Larger gatherings could attract hundreds of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near the rallies and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between activists and police, as well as counterprotesters, are possible. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider any action to violate Lese-majeste laws that ban alleged insults against the monarchy. Demonstrators may block and/or march along roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid the protests due to possible clashes. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Plan for possible localized transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
