Unionized railway workers in the UK plan additional strike Oct. 8; previously confirmed strikes Oct. 1, 5. Rail travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized railway workers affiliated with the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) plan to stage nationwide strikes on Oct. 1,5 and 8 over pay increases, jobs, and work conditions. The labor action will affect rail services operators across England, Scotland, and Wales. The Oct. 1 combined strike between RMT and ASLEF will leave the UK with only 10 percent of available rail services. The other major union, the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA), is also likely to announce renewed industrial action. The three unions had originally planned nationwide walkouts for Sept. 15, 17, and 26 but canceled these actions due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The strikes, should they go ahead, will cause significant disruptions to the UK's rail network, with ASLEF and RMT representing 96 percent of train drivers and 40,000 staff members in the three nations, respectively. Lingering disruptions will likely affect rail services after the strikes conclude as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding, while significant congestion is likely on alternative means of transport. Union members may organize demonstrations, which may cause localized disruption. Further strikes are possible over the coming months.

Advice

Confirm rail services and allow extra time for journeys Oct. 1, 5, 8. Consider alternative transport and book reservations in advance due to increased demand. Follow local travel advice.
