Burkina Faso: Heightened security likely in Ouagadougou during Oc. 21 presidential inauguration

Ibrahim Traore's presidential inauguration ceremony will be held in Ouagadougou at the Constitutional Court from 10:00, Oct. 21.

Police forces will almost certainly maintain roadblocks and perform identity checks around the inauguration venue Oct. 21. Traffic disruptions are possible in areas where heightened security measures are enforced. Security personnel may also close roads temporarily to prioritize official motorcade movements. Gatherings in support of Traore and opposing are possible in Ouagadougou and around the Constitutional Court. Any protests opposing Traore are likely to be forcefully dispersed by security personnel.

Context

Troops led by Captain Ibrahim Traore ousted the ruling military junta headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba Sept. 30, dissolving the Burkinabe government. Coup leaders assert the overthrow was due to Damiba's alleged pursuit of his own political interests and failure to deal with the nation's deteriorating security situation, in addition to disagreements over who should partner with Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism. Damiba had seized control of the country's government in a military coup in January. Traore was subsequently appointed head of state. Tensions will likely remain high across Burkina Faso in at least the near term.

Avoid inauguration-related events to minimize potential disruptions; keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. Avoid all peripheral protests as they are highly susceptible to leading to violence.
