Magnitude-6.7 earthquake strikes south of Panama at around 06:57 Oct. 20. Tsunami threat warning rescinded.

Critical

Event

A magnitude-6.7 offshore earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean south of Panama at around 06:57 Oct. 20. The epicenter was about 62 km (39 miles) south-southwest of Boca Chica, Panama. The Pacific Tsunami warning center initially issued a tsunami threat message stating tsunami waves were possible within 300 km (186 miles) of the epicenter but have issued an update stating that the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now passed.

There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, minor damage is possible along the southern coasts of Panama and Costa Rica close to the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Advice

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
