Chad: Activist groups call for nationwide demonstrations Oct. 20
Several activist groups to stage nationwide demonstrations in Chad Oct. 20. Avoid all demonstrations.
Event
Several activist groups including Les Transformateurs and Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) plan to demonstrate across Chad Oct. 20. The purpose of the action is to denounce the extension of the transitional government, demand a return to democratic civilian rule, and press for the withdrawal of French military forces from the country. As yet, organizers have not released any specific locations or times for individual protests.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security around any demonstrations that may materialize. Security personnel may resort to force in an effort to disperse the gatherings; clashes between demonstrators and police are possible. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Low-level acts of arson or vandalism, including some targeting French interests in the country, cannot be ruled out.
Context
In addition to calling for the immediate return to civilian rule through democratic elections, activist groups are denouncing the outcome of the Inclusive and Sovereign National Dialogue (DNIS) which appointed transitional President Mahamat Deby Itno as head of state for a non-renewable 24-month term on Oct. 8. Recent actions by oppositionists have escalated tensions in N'Djamena, prompting security forces to respond with force and mass arrests. Anti-government demonstrations are unlikely to abate any time soon; numerous activist groups remain defiant despite an existing government-imposed ban on protest activity.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations and heed the instructions of local authorities. Consult with trusted local sources for updated information on any protests. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure non-governmental building.
