Chile: Unionized port workers to strike and stage protests nationwide Oct. 26-27

Unionized port workers to strike and stage protests across Chile Oct. 26-27. Business and traffic disruptions are likely near ports.

Warning

Event

Workers affiliated with the Port Union (Union Portuaria) plan to stage protests associated with a 48-hour strike Oct. 26-27. Around 6,500 employees who work at 23 different ports will take part in the strike and may join protests. The ports that are likely to be the most affected by demonstrations and work stoppages are Antofagasta, San Antonio, Iquique, and San Vicente. The ports in Arica, Coquimbo, and Valparaiso are likely to be the least affected. Workers are demanding a deal with government authorities that would grant them better working conditions.

Significant traffic disruptions have already been reported around the Port of San Antonio, where demonstrators are blocking traffic along Avenida Barros Luco and Calle Sanfuentes with burning debris as of early Oct. 26.

Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to monitor gatherings and could disperse disruptive events. Clashes between protesters and the police are possible. Disruptions to traffic, business, and port operations are likely nationwide Oct. 26-27.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Exercise caution and reconfirm the status of road routes, particularly in the vicinity of ports. Heed the instructions of local officials. Confirm operations at ports nationwide Oct. 26-27.
