Czech Republic: Opposition parties to lead protest in central Prague Oct. 28
Opposition parties to lead protests in central Prague, Czech Republic, Oct. 28; increased security, disruptions likley.
Event
Opposition parties will hold a rally in Wenceslas Square, Prague, from 14:00 Oct. 28, under the banner "Czech Republic First." The protest will unite both left- and right-wing parties, those opposed to the cost of energy, and anti-EU and anti-NATO groups, to denounce government policies. It is not known how many protestors will gather, but the previous "Czech Republic First" rally on Sept. 28 attracted between 40,000 and 70,000 attendees. The demonstration on Oct. 28 will take place on the Czech Republic's National Day.
Authorities will likely deploy additional security forces to monitor and facilitate the action. Large crowds and associated security measures might prompt localized business and transport disruptions in the surrounding area. The demonstration will most likely be peaceful.
Advice
Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before beginning journeys; allow extra time to reach destinations in Prague's Old Town area the afternoon of Oct. 28. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
