Ecuador: Teachers stage nationwide protests Oct. 6

Unionized teachers protest across Ecuador, Oct. 6. Disruptions likely to persist in the vicinity of protests.

Teachers affiliated with the National Union of Educators (Union Nacional de Educadores, UNE) are protesting in several locations nationwide Oct. 6 to reject new salary regulations.

In Quito, activists have gathered outside the Ministry of Education (Ministerio de Educacion), located on Avenida Rio Amazonas. Reports suggest protesters have set fire to debris and are disrupting traffic in the area. In Guayaquil, protesters have gathered along Avenida Perimetral in the Pascuales area in the north of the city. Other protests have also been reported along highways in the provinces of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas and Carchi.

Protests are also likely to take place in other locations, especially outside government buildings or along main roads in urban centers. Significant transport disruptions are likely to continue for the coming hours in the vicinity of protests. Heightened security is possible; clashes cannot be ruled out, especially if the police attempt to remove the protesters forcibly.
