France: Unionized rail workers in Paris continue strike action through Oct. 20 /update 2

Unionized rail workers continue strike in Paris, France, through Oct. 20. Rail disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers employed by French National Railways (SNCF) are continuing strike action in Paris and the wider Ile-de-France Region Oct. 20. The action has been called to protect the right to strike and to demand improved wages. The strike affects Transilien lines H, J, L, P, and R, as well as RER lines C and D. Around 33-50 percent of trains on affected lines may be canceled or delayed.

The strike will likely result in increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative public transportation. Services which do operate are likely to be more congested than usual. Although labor leaders have announced no specific plans for strike-related rallies, demonstrations are possible outside train depots, in central areas of Paris, and outside government buildings. Additional police will likely deploy to monitor all protests; related security measures may lead to localized transport disruptions. Any protests that may materialize will likely remain largely peaceful.

Advice

Reconfirm the status of rail transport in the Paris region during the scheduled strike time frame and into at least the early hours of Oct. 21. Consider using alternative transport for time-sensitive travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transport.
