French Guiana: Further unrest likely in Maripasoula as of Oct. 7

Further unrest likely in Maripasoula, French Guiana, Oct. 7. Tight security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

As of Oct. 7, unrest is highly likely to continue in Maripasoula as tensions increase over utility concerns. Residents are protesting recent electricity and water outages. During late Oct. 6, security forces used tear gas to disband gatherings of protesters who reportedly set vehicles and buildings on fire and erected roadblocks, including near Maripasoula Airport (MPY). Local residents have maintained a general strike. Additionally, the authorities have deployed reinforcements tasked with maintaining order.

Authorities will almost certainly impose heightened security measures and respond promptly to any further protests. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, especially if there is a high turnout and roads are blocked. Clashes are possible during gatherings, especially if police forcibly disperse protesters or if demonstrators attempt to breach security barriers.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
