The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has called on all businesses to close in the Greater Accra Region Oct. 19. The union cited the poor state of the economy, including the continued depreciation of the cedi currency (GHS), and what is perceived as unfair tax policies on businesses. Other unions have vowed to join the action. The call follows a similar action in Kumasi (Ashanti Region) where traders went on strike over tax policies Oct. 10-13.

Related protests remain possible, notably in Accra city center where most government buildings are located. Increased security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near any gathering that materializes. Clashes cannot be ruled out.
