Ghana: Mine workers union protest in Accra on April 25 and 26

Ghana Mineworkers’ Union to protest at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and Parliament in Accra, Ghana, April 25 and 26.

Informational

The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU) will protest in Accra on April 25 and 26. Workers will protest at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and Parliament. The gathering has been coordinated with local police officials. The union is launching the protest to demand that the government revoke the mining lease of a company that operates Bogoso-Prestea Mines. The union alleges that the company can not effectively manage the mine. A few hundred people could participate in the protest.

Security forces will likely deploy to monitor the gathering. Demonstrators could march towards the intended protest areas from staging areas elsewhere in the city or march between each of the two protest locations on either April 25 or 26. Violence is unlikely. Disruptions to road travel are likely, particularly if street marches occur.

Avoid the gatherings as a standard precaution. Plan for ground travel delays. Heed the directives of local officials.
