Guinea: Heightened security likely in Conakry after protest activity obstructs thoroughfare Oct. 28

Heightened security likely in Conakry, Guinea, after protest activity obstructs thoroughfare Oct. 28; business disruptions remain possible.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely in parts of Conakry over the coming hours after protesters blocked a segment of the capital's Route le Prince Oct. 28. The purpose of the demonstration, which reportedly obstructed traffic between the Bambeto and Hamdallaye roundabouts, was to denounce the deaths of multiple individuals who were killed in protests Oct. 20-21. The US Embassy in Guinea accordingly issued a demonstration alert for protest activity on the thoroughfare as well as in the vicinity of the nearby Kakimbo Towers, advising US citizens to avoid the protest-affected areas and seek alternative routes. Embassy officials also called on US citizens residing at the Kakimbo Towers to shelter in place for the duration of the protest activity. Security forces reportedly deployed to the scene of the demonstration, arresting at least one person and instructing motorists and other passersby to avoid the area.

Transport and business disruptions remain possible in protest-affected areas over the coming hours. Further protest activity and clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out over the coming days.

Advice

Avoid all protest activity as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any lingering transport disruptions. Keep away from any locations where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
